Crop Circles – Fact or Fiction?

Although many scientists view them as no more than clever designs, made by human hoaxer, other researchers claim there is proof that these mysterious formations remain unexplained.

The ongoing debate among many crop circle investigators and sceptics focuses on whether they are man-made or not. While many designs are clearly and admittedly made by people - veteran crop circle researcher Colin Andrew estimates that up to 80 percent of them are man-made - some researchers insist that many formations are not - in fact, cannot be - made by humans.

Sceptical explanations for crop formations have ranged from one early theory that they were created by hedgehogs running in circles, to the probable truth that many are created by clever college students with too much spare time! The believers' explanations have been equally wide ranging, from claiming they are the work of extraterrestrials to the idea that the formations are created by the Earth itself as some kind of warning to humanity.

Many people claim to feel special energies in crop circles which they say proves they are of some unusual and special origin and others point to the scale of the circles – which often spread over several acres – and the wide geographic distribution to claim that they are a global phenomenon, not a series of pranks. In this version of the genesis of crop circles, the increasingly elaborate designs are evidence that somebody or something is trying to communicate with us, by using an ever more sophisticated vocabulary.

On their side, sceptics have the confessions of many crop circle creators. While their claim is called into serious question by some researchers, such hoaxers have proved before witnesses and television cameras that they can create large, elaborate designs in just a few hours.
