Doug and Dave Senior Citizen Crop Circle Hoaxers
There have been nearly three decades of crop circle hysteria, with reports in national and international news, research centres established to examine the phenomenon and glossy coffee table books printed with full colour plates of crop circles around the world. But in 1991 two men, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, stepped out of the rural dark, to take credit for the entire crop circle phenomenon.
Their pranks had begun, they said, as a lark back in the late 1970s. They wanted to fool people into thinking that UFOs had landed and so they made their first circle, but their hobby gradually evolved into an obsession, involving night after night of circular toil in the fields of England. The tools of their trade were astonishingly simple, wooden planks and string. Armed with this equipment, the two were able to demonstrate the ability to fashion crop circles similar to many that had been found.
But cerealogists thats crop circle researchers to you and me claimed that it strained credibility to think that the pair had created all the hundreds of circles that had been found in the past decade, and they certainly could not have been responsible for the circles outside of England. Doug and Dave, in their late sixties by the time they came forward, simply shrugged and said that any smart chap with a bit of wood and some string could have worked it out for themselves.
Over time though, even the most hardened crop circle doubters began to question Doug and Dave's confessions. Was it really possible for them to have created hundreds of circles throughout the 1980s? Were they themselves just publicity seekers? These questions have not been answered, leaving it unclear how many circles Doug and Dave were actually responsible for.
