Famous squash players
In 1933 the great Egyptian player F.D. Amr Bey, won the first of his five British Open Championships, a title then seen as the World Championship. From the 1050s the dominating Khan dynasty from Pakistan took the titles almost without interference. They included Hashim (1951-1958), Roshan (1957), Azam (1959-1962), Mohibullah (1963), Jahangir (1982-1992) and Jansher (1993-1994). The incredible popularity of squash in Pakistan and India can be dated from this dominance of the sport.
The most famous woman squash player ever, the Australian Heather McKay, dominated the sport from 1966 to 1977 and remained undefeated throughout her playing career. Her successor was the New Zealander, Susan Devoy, who won the title 8 times between 1984 and 1992.
Perhaps the players who had the most impact on the development of the sport were Jonah Barrington and Geoff Hunt. They dominated squash between the late 1960s and early 1980s, starting a boom in the sport which raised the number of courts to 46,000 worldwide and the number of players to over 15 million by 1994 – since then, although participation has dropped somewhat, squash continues to be a popular activity.
There are many famous people who play squash including:
- Stefan Edberg and Roger Federer – both better known for their tennis careers
- Kevin Keegan - the footballer.
- Tommy Steele - comedian and singer who played squash regularly with Leonard Rossiter also a comedian, until the latter’s death.
- Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev are both fanatical squash players.
- Kim Wilde the pop star, David Walliams of Little Britain and George Michael all play regularly.
