Famous tennis players

Perhaps the most famous of all is Björn Borg who became a tennis player by accident, when his father came home one day, with a tennis racquet he had won as a prize in a local ping-pong tournament. At the age of eleven, Björn won his first tennis tournament, at thirteen he was beating the best of Sweden's under-eighteen players and at fourteen he left school to devote his time to tennis. At the age of fifteen he was selected to play for Sweden in the 1972 Davis Cup, becoming the youngest player to win a Davis Cup match. Björn Borg also became the youngest winner of the oldest professional championship, the US Pro, whose singles he won in 1974, 1975 and 1976.

Billie Jean Moffitt King won 12 Grand Slam singles titles, 16 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She is generally considered to be one of the greatest female tennis players and female athletes in history. The tennis match for which she is most famous is the Battle of the Sexes in 1973, in which she defeated Bobby Riggs, a former Wimbledon men's champion who had been the World Number One tennis player for the years 1941, 1946, and 1947.

Venus Williams has won career doubles grand slam with sister Serena as well as being the winner of Wimbledon women’s singles titles in 2000, 2001 and 2005, and two U.S. Opens in 2000 and 2001, as well as the 2000 Olympic gold medallist. She has the recorded fastest serve in female tennis history with a 127 mile per hour blast in 1998.

Pete Sampras is one of the all-time great tennis players. He spent 286 consecutive weeks in the 1990s as the number one ranked player in the world. In 1990, when he was nineteen years old, he beat Andre Agassi to become the youngest man ever to win the U.S. Open, and from 1993-1998 he ended each year as the top-ranked player in the world.
