Fitness for racquet sports
Racquet games challenge all the energy systems of a body and require a combination of skill, stamina, strength, power and reaction time. These are sports one should get fit to play, rather than play to get fit.
A base of aerobic fitness is best acquired through running, rowing or step exercise. Stretching and strength work should also be part of the preparation. A racquet sports coach will also teach on-court drills that improve fitness and skill and can be practised alone.
To play racquet sports, it's necessary to learn the skills and rules of the game, and find a partner. Joining a club and booking in for lessons is a good introduction to the sport. Most clubs have coaches who'll teach the basics of the game to beginners of all ages as well as coach players of all standards. Clubs have rankings, leagues and ladders, so each player can find others of a similar standard to play against.
Tennis can be played outdoors or indoors, on grass, concrete, clay or artificial turf. The game is played as singles or doubles. Many health clubs and gyms have indoor and outdoor courts and most also run 'short tennis' clubs, which is played on a smaller court with softer balls.
Badminton is played on an indoor court over a high net. The players use a racquet to hit a shuttlecock, which must not hit the ground while in play. Badminton is very accessible and is often played in school halls, church halls and sports centres.
Squash and racquetball are played in four-walled courts with sprung floors. The object is for players to return the ball from the front wall. The ball is allowed to hit the other three walls within certain areas.
