Perfect Halloween Locations
If you’re planning a holiday on 31 October, there are several wonderfully scary locations to which you can travel, all of which have organised ghost walks and evening events, although there is no reason not to wander round them yourself in the dusk, and make up your own ghost stories. Here are three of the best:
Chillingham Castle is an astonishing medieval fortress with Tudor additions which has featured in many television programmes over the years, it is believed to be the most haunted castle in Britain. For over 600 years the family of the Lords Grey have been in residence and many of the ghosts are believed to be their ancestors and relations. Things to look out for include: the antiques shop, woodland walks, traditionally furnished rooms, a topiary garden and – above all - a torture chamber! All night ghost vigils are held here - especially at Halloween.
Mary King's Close is a maze of underground streets that was sealed off from the outside world more than two centuries ago. It became entombed when Edinburgh's Royal Exchange was built in 1753. The top floors of the houses were demolished and the lower floors incorporated into its foundations. The rooms of many houses still exist, and according to some reports, so do a number of their former residents. Some of the houses have since been disinterred and in a recent experiment, volunteers were asked to walk through the area and report any ‘strange sensations’ – 80% reported a feeling of coldness where a dark clad male figure is said to roam at night.
Warwick Castle has some pretty inhospitable dungeon chambers and several murders. On the 30th of September 1628 Sir Fulke Greville, owner of Warwick castle was murdered in London by Ralph Heywood an old servant. During an argument Heywood took out a knife his master, then, aghast at what he had done, he turned it upon himself. Greville however did not die immediately - instead he suffered a long and painful death in his chambers within the South tower of the castle. His ghost is said to emerge from his portrait and roam the tower.
