Dole Plantation – the world’s biggest maze
There aren’t that many mazes you can see on Google Earth, but one such is the Pineapple Garden Maze at Dole Plantation in Hawaii. It has been officially recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest maze, covering an area of more than two acres with a path length of 1.7 miles.
To be clear though, this isn't a maze made out of pineapple plants, which would be counterproductive as pineapples are actually too low growing to make a maze. Rather - when viewed from the air, or Google Earth – the maze is in the shape of a giant pineapple. The maze is actually made from shaped hedges of local plants, including the hibiscus which is the native flower of Hawaii. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may find the maze a mass of blossom, or only a few flowers poking through. This is exacerbated by the fact that the constant trimming tends to take off the flower buds, but because Hawaii is so fertile, the maze has to be trimmed every week or people wouldn’t be able to get through the paths!
In addition, it has a number of separate entrances that surround the ‘pineapple’ design. Before you enter, you're given a card with six empty spaces and a time stamp – the intention is to find six boxes hidden in the maze, each containing a stencil you use to fill in the empty spaces on your card. Once you've found all six designs, you exit the maze and get your closing time stamp.
